Last weekend kicked off the 2016-2017 PIHA season in the Rockies as the Colorado Stallions took on, defending Western Conference Champion, Colorado Springs Thunder. By the end of the night the Stallions proved they may be the team to beat coming into this new season.
Last year’s regular season MVP, Derrick Burnett, gave the home crowd something to cheer about early as he fired one past Stallions netminder, Cody Stephen-Miller just 4min into game 1. The Stallions did not back down and even the game up twice, the last with 1sec to go in period one. Tied at 3 after the second and then the 1st overtime, Ryan Wass-Tursick took the game over while shorthanded as he walked a Stallion defender and slid the game winner in on the backhand.
Game 2 was a goal scorers dream as the final showed 9-6 after a barrage of offense with very little defense. Again the Thunder went on top early but the Stallions seemed more invested and battled to the final 3 points of the series and the series win. They find themselves atop the division for the first time in their existence and have no plans on looking back.
The Stallions will play 4 games this coming Saturday as they will take on an always lethal Parker Prowlers squad and then the expansion CS Vikings. Series begin at 3pm and 715pm and will be held at beautiful, Xfinity Arena.
