The 2016 Jr PIHA season came to a close this past weekend as Xfinity Sports Arena hosted the Jr PIHA Playoffs in 5 separate divisions. As the weekend ended, most people would assume the Prowlers Organization was the only organization to show up…. That was not the case!
In the 8u division, the Blizzard had found themselves on top throughout the season until the final week of games as the Prowlers took over that first spot after a series sweep. That would prove costly as the 3rd seeded Thunder Green team came to play Sunday morning and swept the Blizzard in two. (5-0 & 4-1) The Thunder team ran into an overwhelming Prowlers squad as the Prowlers received the bye into the Finals and waited for a young, overzealous Green team. The Prowlers would take the 8u championship on 4-2, and 5-1 wins. Dawson Charles would be named Playoff MVP as he posted 4 goals and 2 assists in the series.
The 10u division would end up being no surprise as the Prowlers fed off their two-loss regular season with a clean sweep. The favorites would sweep the Stallions and then move on to sweep the Blizzard Orange with 6-3 and 7-1 wins. The Prowlers spread the wealth all season but road the shoulders of Conner Daniel to the 10u Championship as he put up 12 points in 4 games for MVP honors.
This organization would continue to dominate in the 12u Major division as they did all year long. The Prowlers Grey squad came together early and worked their way to a 18-3-1-0 record atop the division standings. They would then proceed to knock off the 4th seeded Fire in their first series Sunday and finish things off with a series sweep of the Thunder for the 12u Major Championship. Harry Hambrick would win Playoff MVP honors and take home the individual hardware.
12u Minor division was a surprise but not the name of the team on top. The Prowlers would again hoist the Jr PIHA Trophy in this division after beating the favored Thunder in a spectacular 3-game final. The teams would split the first two games, both winning by sizable margins and be looking at a single game to see who would be crowned. The Prowlers won a nail-biter by a goal to take home their 4th championship in as many divisions. Bobby Mills would score a natural hat trick in the decisive game three and be awarded the division’s Playoff MVP.
Although Coach Cody, was looking for the Division Clean Sweep the 15u division had been a tough one throughout the 2016 season. Both Fire teams would find themselves atop the division tied in points but would then, find themselves, watching from the side as they were both upset in their first round tilts. An experience Blizzard Orange team would move past a ‘play-in series’ against their counterpart, Blizzard White to upset the 1st seeded, Fire Red squad. Then a young, talented Prowlers team finished off the upsets with a thrilling 2-games to 1 wins over the Fire Grey. With the Prowlers coming off an emotional win and the Orange looking at potential games 6, 7, and 8 for the day, the Final would be anyone’s to take. The Blizzard proved to much for the Prowlers and would be lifting the 15u trophy and Jr PIHA Champions. Chase Trautwein was named Playoff MVP as he led this team at both ends of the rink.
As the 2016 season ends and we already look forward to 2017, the coaches and Xfinity staff are excited for these young players grow at this amazing game. What a great weekend of hockey.
